TELEFON (Don Siegel, 1977)

I found a box of old B movies on VHS tapes outside a video store a little while ago, and I've made it my mission to watch them all. First cab off the rank, Charles Bronson stars in

TELEFON
The operation that can trigger 51 human time bombs!

1977. Back in the fifties the Russians deep programmed 51 agents with subliminal orders to explode US military installations, wiped their memories and slipped them into American Life. The time never came to set them off, and they live on unawares as local carpenters, mommy's and priests all across the country. Until now! Evil Donald Pleasance is an old Stalinist who doesn't like this new 'live and let live' detente attitude Russia has with the US, and decides instead of getting purge-murdered back home he'll tour America and call up some old friends, setting them off by reciting the Robert Frost "miles to go before i sleep" poem (as referenced in Death Proof) and their original Ruski name as the trigger. The Russians send over KGB agent Charles Bronson to ice Donald Pleasance and save them a lot of embarrassment and a possible third World War.

At first it can be a bit confusing with the Russian generals speaking randomly in American, British or Russian accents (Bronson stays straight up Bronson). There's lot's of scenes in offices while they lay it out and you don't quite know where you are at times, but generally there is a big poster of Lenin on the wall to give you a clue when it's Russia.

This a very cheap looking movie, but Don Seigel (he made Dirty Harry and lotsa hard boiled noir stuff) manages with panache and busts out a few pretty thrilling, impressive scenes, and even when its just flat out cheap looking, you've got either Pleasance being Supremely Oily or Bronson being tough and mustachioed to make you smile. And of course, the very concept of Charles Bronson being a KGB Agent is a novelty that never really wears off.

What's really cool is getting to see these little moments of all these different peoples everyday lives, fighting with the wife or cooking dinner for the kids and then suddenly they get the call and go into zombie crush kill destroy mode. There's some nice obsolete punch card super computer action too, if you're into that.

I don't imagine this is going to be coming out on DVD any time soon, but if you see it dumped on the street, pick it up!

ADDENDUM

Apparently Seigel asked Charles Bronson to shave his moustache for the role. His response: "No Moustache, No Bronson".

DION & THE BELMONTS

Dion Dimucci. Truly an Italian American icon. It's a shame they dressed him up in those college boy sweaters and didn't write him some songs about being a knife weilding teenage junkie street punk that he could actually relate to, but at least he got to be be an immortal bad ass on The Wanderer and the awesome kazoo powered "Little Diane"....

Thanks to tom Lyngcoln for hipping me to that one...

And dig him here in classic 'live' action. He's trying to get it moving but with the suit and the crowd they've stuck him with, i don't like his chances. Some of them are actually glaring at him!

And Rhonda noticed his uncanny resemblance to a young David Bowie! They got all the same face moves...

LONELY AVENUE - THE UNLIKELY LIFE AND TIMES OF DOC POMUS

This really is a beautiful book. Very affecting. The loneliness and the dreaming and the wry smiles and the whole great life force of Doc Pomus sink right into you. As a quick primer for those who don't know who he is, at various times Doc was the only crippled, jewish blues singer in america, hack writer of million selling selling teen pop records (including some timeless classics like 'save the last dance for me' and 'lonely avenue'), professorial gambler and mafia card game organizer, among other things. His life in music criss crossed with so many significant artists i could not possibly list them here, but I greatly enjoyed seeing them pop up from page to page, Big Maybelle to Rodney Dangerfield.

A lot of research has obviously gone into this book, but it's written in the style of novel for full dramatic and emotional effect. Just have a read of the of the introduction...

It's something, huh?

Here's some great descriptive parts from when he's living 'the life'...

And I love how it's always talking about the food they're eating at 5 in the morning. Makes me hongry...

And the loneliness...

And heres another bit I love describing the lobby of The Forest Hotel, where he lives while doing his well paid hackwork for hill and range...

Just read the dang book, okay?

On The Radio, In The World … 26/11/10

I am home! Never felt so good. Warm, but not sweaty. Records and dog to touch. Simpsons at my fingertips. Happy... Plus I came home to a package containing a copy of one of my all time favourite crappy records, "He Makes Me So Mad" by The Hollywood Jills, on the very budget sounding Tune-Kel Records. It's so crappy, I can't believe it got distributed nationally on Capitol Records. And that Northern Soul geeks pay hundreds of dollars for it. It's awesome though. makes me smile a great deal. So i'll play that. And some other stuff too...

Oh yeah, Mohair and Emma Peel have a new mod record hop in the dungeon below the Grace Darling starting this Saturday (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=173798575965429). SONGS THE SIMPSONS TAUGHT US

Since arriving home from five weeks travelling yeasterday, i have had to have a serious ingestion of The Simpsons to restore my brain to it's proper equilibrium. I couple of songs popped up that I realized I love from their Simpsons cameo but have no idea what they are...

Excuse my ignorance, but are Journey always this awesome?

Always gets me a little teary as Homer searches for his soulmate via montage...

I think I first heard this on The Simpsons too...

Here's Rhonda's special mention from Futurama, Connie Francis' "I Will Wait For You"...

Any other favourite songs you first heard on The Simpsons?

YOUR ANIMAL

The exquisite but now sadly defunct Your Animal are regrouping (with Liam from My Disco subbing for Jarrad on the bass) to do one last show before Monty knocks out a kid (or dies or moves to yugoslavia or something like that, i forget which). They did a weird kind of dark Twin Peaksy doom laden vocal group sound that really got to me, and theres a little hole in my heart now that they're gone. I always knew they probably wouldn't last that long so i savoured each performance and recorded a few from out in the crowd. Heres some videos from an early gig at the old bar:

And here's some audio from their last gig at The Old Bar.

"Joey the Pouch Rider"

"You Never Hurt The One you Love"

"Baby It's You"

The final gig (for some time anyway) is in the wonderful cellar of the Grace Darling Hotel on smith st, next Sat the 16th of October, with Sophie Brous, Clairy Brown and Amy Wild Horses on the DJ'ing. I'll see you down there...

CHARLIE RICH ON HI RECORDS

I love Charlie Rich. He's a Charmer.

His time at Hi Records in the mid sixties was brief and not particularly significant for either party, but i've always found the records they made rather charming.

Charlie probably cut his goldiest bricks at Sun in the late 50's but his best stuff always had more of a roly poly barrelhouse piano storytelling vibe than the standard psychotic knife-weilding energy of his label mates. He'd finally hit on some big silver haired Nashville country mega stardom recording for Epic in the seventies, but for the most part that stuff sounds pretty staid.

Hi was still searching for an identity, presently halfway between the hokey instrumentals they'd started with and the soupy smooth memphis soul they'd hit with in the early 70's, desperately searching for a star vocalist. Charlie wasn't it, the records didn't do shit, and within a year he had his walking papers, but I kinda wish they'd stuck with it a few more years. The records aren't really classics, but there was some real potential in the sound they were getting. Charlie always wanted be a jazz pianist (and spent the late forties working supper clubs in Mel torme mode), he had a great country crooners voice, and he always had a natural feel for for r'n'b, and I guess that all comes together nicely on the Hi Stuff. He did a whole album of Hank Williams songs which is a bit patchy, but I love his dreamy rendition of Wedding Bells. Pass On By is classic memphis country soul coming from the country side, and Can't Get Right has that nice mid period Hi strutting organ funk I could listen to all day.

All Charlies Hi stuff was collected on a CD in 2000 that's still pretty easy to find, so if you dig these, git out there and cop you some silver haired country soul...

On The Radio, In The World... 23/9/10

ON THE RADIO

Ooooooh, got this great deep soul thing by Ray Lewis called "I Still Love You" (the sequel to "getting over you", He was wrong!) that I've been after forever. Man it's good. Got that Johnny Brantley stamp of weird intensity all over it. Also some early Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds (he was neck and neck with Tom Jones as the ballsiest singer in the early brit r'n'b scene, but instead of becoming an international pop star he became britains leading collector of Nazi war memorabilia...), plus more from Motorhead, The Pretty Things, Brownie Mcgee, Louis Jordan, plus other stuff too...

TOM JONES / CHRIS FARLOWE

I. JUST. CAN'T. STOP. WATCHING. THIS.

Tom Jones Circa 1964. The crowd, the singing, the rockin combo behind him, the part where he points at the camera, but most especially, The crotch thrusts...

Around the same time, a young man named Chris Farlowe was neck and neck with Tom for the title of ballsiest, brassiest singer in the London R'n'B scene. He made some great records, and had a no 1 hit with the jagger/richard produced "out of time", but while Tom went on to become an international pop star and underwear collector, Chris went on to become Britain's foremost collector of Nazi war memorabilia. Make of that what you will...

It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.”

Geneive Waite - Romance is On The Rise (1973)

I love this record. I love the lyrics. I love the way Genieve squeals in that weird childlike breathy marilyn monroe voice and gets totally wild and off key on things like White Cadillac but it's just magic all the way. I love the Fleetmood Mac / Broadway type arrangements that are totally west coast session muso slick but completely tasteful and idisynchratic at the same time. I just love it all!

John Phillips (he formerly of the mama's and the papas) wrote some of the material for an aborted broadway show, but ended up folding it into this record he produced for his third wife, actress Genevieve Waite. It was a critical success but a commercial stiff and quickly dissappeared. Phillips blamed poor distribution, but it managed to get itself distributed in Australia by Festival, where my mate Teo's mother Jan came upon it (I think Henry from the black cat put her onto it when it came out) and proceeded to annoy him by playing it every day of his childhood. When I started doing the radio show she kept saying I should hear this genevieve waite record (to which Teo strongly objected), and several years later she finally managed to play it to me. Thanks, Jan. It a real treasure.

The whole record is great, but heres a couple of faves to get you hot on the trail...

Danny

White Cadillac

Trashy Rumours

It was reissued on Cd a few years ago but now seems to be out of print again. You don't see the LP too often and people usually want a fair bit of money for it, but I found a copy just yesterday for $15, so don't give up hope!

THE TWILIGHT ZONE (1959)

Been watching the original series of The Twilight Zone for the first time. Amazing! The quality of script and direction in each episode is just sterling, comparable to great films of the time, and the voice overs by series creator Rod Serling are just to die for! And then at the end of each episode you actually get to see the voice! He's got some kind of weird lip thing and seeing him talk and that voice coming out of him just makes me quiver with delight...

Here's a classic episode in three parts (with a nice Serling outro at the end of part 3...)

On The Radio, In The World … 2/9/10

ON THE RADIO

A couple of special treats this week! Got a couple of unbeleiveably great uncensored Elvis recordings where he and the band get loose as hell and he lets rips with the expletives like Al Sweringen from Deadwood, as well a recording I found on the The Hound Blog of a pirate radio show done by a GI in Vietnam named Dave Rabbit circa 1970. "We bring the truth to the first termers here in the republic of Vietnam. We also bring you Hard Acid Rock Music, the up to date music of todays american youth..." The music, from the likes of Sugarloaf, Bloodrock and Three Dog Night, is pretty painful, but Dave Rabbit's announcing is just hilarious, so I've edited it so that each 12 minute acid rock masterpiece only goes 20 seconds or so...

Aside from that, got some great r'n'b from Joe Lutcher and Wynonie Harris, a bunch of things form Sam Cookes SAR records label, some 80's australian stuff from The Primitive calculators, the Particles and Asyluum, and some other stuff too...
